Orange Sulphur Butterfly Life Cycle Watercolor Print

ORANGE SULFUR (Colias eurytheme) This is a southern species that spread to the Northeast and is now found throughout the country, also called alfalfa butterfly. It is highly variable in color and hybridizes with the Clouded Sulfur. It has a wingspan of 1 7/8 - 2 11/16 inches. The Southern Dogface butterfly also shown here is named for it's upper wing pattern and has a sharply pointed upper wing. It is mostly a southern butterfly but does occasionally spread north reaching as far as southern Ontario, Canada. The Sulfurs may be responsible for the name butterfly and most are tropical with about 300 species worldwide.
About the artist: Nan started with a four-painting series on the individual stages of the Monarch's metamorphosis. From there she began her current series of life cycle works, each stage of a butterfly set within in its native environment featuring its specific host plants.
Along the way, she continued her art education at the Rochester Institute of Technology, as well as at Atelier XVII and the Parsons School, the latter both in Paris. Nan's focus is on uncultivated plants and creatures from the wild.�And not just in their most beautiful states, but in all phases of their life cycles. Included are those overlooked, downtrodden ones often stigmatized as weeds or pests that many people would uproot or spray. She dedicates her art to honoring and protecting them.

Created with durable, oil pigmented inks on archival papers. Shipped with a label for the reverse side of the print (once framed) offering information about the subject matter.
