Although the drama of metamorphosis has been documented with greater detail in other titles, this presentation stands out because of its classroom setting. The process is seen through the children's eyes as they experience the excitement of observing the wiggly caterpillar, watch it molt, change into a chrysalis, endure the endless waiting, and stare in wonder as a Painted Lady butterfly emerges and dries its wings. The closing pages show the class at the window watching the insect pause on a flower before flying away to begin the life cycle once again. Pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations create a cheerful setting similar in style to those found in Miriam Cohen's books about classroom events. Close-ups show the stages of transformation as captions wend along plant leaves and stems reminiscent of a caterpillar crawling. A small collection of butterflies commonly found in most parts of the U.S. and a list of addresses of butterfly centers are appended. An inviting book that young children can relate to and one that teachers will find valuable to support nature-study projects. Ages 3 to 6.
